Dr. Michael Merriman is a highly experienced ophthalmologist with 21 years as a specialist in New Zealand, following eight years of registrar and fellowship training in both New Zealand and England. He is recognised for his expertise in cataract surgery, vision correction with refractive laser, ICLs and IOLs surgery, as well as glaucoma management and pterygium surgery.

Dr. Merriman’s approach to patient care is based on improving quality of life. He is dedicated to providing the best possible outcomes by utilising his training, experience, and knowledge of the latest technologies to address cataract, visual focus, and glaucoma issues.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Merriman has been the Clinical Director for Ophthalmology at Waikato Hospital since 2022. He is a Senior Honorary Lecturer at the University of Auckland and has held various leadership roles, having served as the Chairman of Ophthalmology New Zealand (ONZ), the RANZCO Selection Board and the NZ Qualifications and Education Committee, respectively. He is a member of the Australasian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

When asked what motivated him to pursue a career in this industry, Dr. Merriman replied, “Maintaining or restoring a person’s sight is such a rewarding profession. Ophthalmology is also a branch of medicine that is constantly changing as new technologies and pharmaceuticals are developed. Keeping up with the latest technologies and treatments keeps it very interesting.”
