About Ammar
Ammar is thrilled to be back in New Zealand and rejoining the Hamilton Eye Clinic team. Ammar completed his medical degree at the University of Otago and furthered his studies to graduate with Master of Ophthalmology. He completed his specialist ophthalmology training having worked in several centers across New Zealand before settling in Waikato. Ammar is a consultant ophthalmologist at Waikato Public Hospital where he enjoys training medical students and junior ophthalmologists.
He has undergone further subspecialist fellowship training, here at Waikato Hospital, in medical retina and vitreoretinal surgery. Ammar provides comprehensive ophthalmology care and specializes in retinal conditions such as diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration and has special interest in uveitis (ocular inflammation). As a surgeon, he is able to address diseases that affect the retina and macula such as retinal detachment, epiretinal membranes, macular holes and diabetic retinopathy as well as complex cataract surgeries and secondary lens implantation.
Ammar is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) and is affiliated with the American Society of Retina Specialist (ASRS) and European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA).
When not at work, Ammar and his wife, Judy, enjoy bike rides, walks and swimming with their three children. In summer, they love to explore different beaches and in winter they enjoy skiing after having spent 20 years around the South Island of New Zealand.
